Captain’s Log, stardate 79805.36. We have discovered a number of strange species on Dreizhen III in the last few days, but none more consequential than the multi-form species we have come to know as ‘Klendathu bugs’.
They are a caste-based species comprised of ferocious warriors the size of horses with weapons for every limb, flying varieties of the same, flamethrowing tanker bugs, plasma bugs capable of firing artillery shots into orbit and beyond, and a coordinating ‘brain bug’ that had become the object of worship for the Grandmaster of the Order of Divine Harmony and his inner circle.
It was only due to the timely intervention of Atenist forces that the colony formerly known as Shitau was saved from destruction, though ultimately the defeat of the bugs came through the compromise of their leader, the brain bug or ‘Undermind’ as the Order came to know it – by the Tok’ra Polyphron, who used her natural abilities to take control of the swarm through its leader, and order them to destroy one another.
Though this is not the preferred option when dealing with new species regardless of how belligerent, I am satisfied there were no other options, and Polyphron seems contrite over having done so, such actions being in violation of her Tok’ra ethics.
In light of the late Grandmaster M’Hum’s proclivities and the danger he placed our and his own people in, I have seen fit to place the now retired Lieutenant Commander S’Lace as Administrator of the colony, which is to be reorganised into the Harmony Institute, an educational facility that will serve all the peoples of the Dreizhen System. Shitau has been renamed Um’ro, a name I am satisfied is more suitable than the uninspired tautology the Order had chosen.
While the journeys of the Excalibur proved unremarkable in the universe designated K-11, the Hercules’ mission to respond to a Klingon distress call proved much more eventful. The Klingons had it seemed been operating with slipstream technology, something Starfleet Command was quite interested to learn. The imperfections of their version of this technology meant that a Borg ship, trapped since the destruction of Unimatrix 01, was able to attach itself to their vessel and assimilate its crew.
Our people were eventually able to reach an accord with the Borg, and the vessel was brought out of subspace. Although some questionable ethics were employed after the Borg surrendered, we were able to de-assimilate all aboard. Despite an ill-considered attempt by a Cardassian vessel to claim the Klingon and Borg ships as salvage, the arrival of more Klingon ships dissuaded them convincingly.
It is perhaps serendipity, that of the four Borg recovered from the vessel as its only survivors, all are former Starfleet Captains taken at the Battle of Wolf 359, and among them is my father Captain Sotek.
It is a strange circumstance to find a member of one’s family returned from the dead, but not the first time I have experienced such irregularities. I hope it is not the last.
It is also with great solemnity that we must add to the role of our honoured dead Captain Hadrian Palamas, and Warrant Officer Theodoros Sklavos, both lost in action on the Dreizhen surface. We remember their lives, and honour their sacrifices.
End log.
